Statement on Safety in Juarez
In recent months the violence in Juarez has been in the news around the country; most of the violence has been directed toward drug lords in retaliation to an earlier killing. There has been some spill over of extortion threats toward some upper and middle class Mexicans.
As God's representatives, we have placed our trust in Him and are responsible to continue on as He leads and provides. One of the primary objectives of the Short Term Missions teams in Juarez is to teach young people and to instil in them strong Godly character, specifically, Godly principles of faith, trust, and obedience. Although we are responsible to use wisdom, we must be careful that we do not promote the human motivation of fear. In doing so, we will not only teach our children to run or even worse, to believe that the priority in life is our self-interest, but we will also deny them the opportunity that God may use to reveal Himself and change their lives.
Having said that, God has also given us gifts of wisdom. If at any time, Life Challenge Staff believes that the mission teams would be in danger, we would take extra precautions and possibly change our activity schedule to include other areas of ministry.
At this time the violence is still being directed toward areas in the city that have known connections. As of yet, the extortionist have not ventured into the area of harassing U.S. citizens. We do not see the violence or experience it in the day to day ministry of Life Challenge; we only hear about it in the news, but we stay away from areas where we don't belong, and we know that we are under God's protection.
The Life Challenge Staff is continually monitoring the situation and should there be a threat of violence toward our teams, we will make alternative arrangements for our teams to stay and work in El Paso.
Remember, God takes care of those who do his will. Consider what He told Joshua:
" Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed,
for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
